Dear parents and students!

Today was a day full of fun!
We started off the day with a fun Earth Day inspired house game about properly sorting recycling and garbage!

Then we started our UOI summative. For this summative we have combined both classes and they were super excited about it! In their groups, students are responsible for creating their own country and all the important aspects of it (name, flag, motto, government, constitution, services, etc.) It was great to see the students be so engaged! At the end of the summative students will be presenting their country and the potential citizens (students and parents) will have a vote! Please keep May 3rd in mind, we hope to have parents attend!

Next we had our DANCE PARTY!!! Students had so much fun and were really grooving!

We then ended off our day by helping our reading buddies pack up for home!

NOTES:

Good evening parents and students!

Today was a great ice cream day! There we many smiling, chocolate sauce covered faces.

I am also happy to announce that Lucas from our class was one of the top students for fundraising today! Tomorrow he will get to sit at my chair and I will have to join the students at the tables.

We also had a great time watching students pie Mr. Foster and Ms. Samuel in the face!

Tomorrow is the last day to bring in your Recent and childhood pictures for Arts Night. If you have not already sent in both pictures, please do so tomorrow.

Tomorrow is also our Earth Day Spirit Day…be sure to wear you blue, green, and brown colours!
Students attending the dance are also allowed to wear other casual clothes. Also bring in some money for the dance as there will be treats to buy!

Math:
Today students looked at patterns in decimals when using a calculator. We looked at how to convert a fraction into a decimal by using a calculator and then looked at how we can see a pattern if the numerator is increased by one each time. While doing their math worksheet, they might see other patters as well and we will discuss those tomorrow!

Language:
We started the lesson by learning some new vocabulary that is important when talking about narrative writing. We then looked at a plot diagram and took a try at filling one out! Students worked in pairs and were given picture books to analyze. It was great to see so many students fully invested in this activity. Reading stories and looking at their plot is a great way to build our knowledge in preparation of making our own!

 UOI: Government
Today we finished talking about what it means to be a Canadian citizen. We looked at our Constitution and Charter of Rights and Freedoms. I really enjoyed seeing students evaluate their way of living and notice how the Charter and Constitution had an affect on them. We also talked about how other counties are not as lucky to have the rights and freedoms that we do. We created a word wall on the board using the inspiring words they have found in our recent readings.
Tomorrow we will be introducing our Government Summative!!

Dear parents and students,
Today students enjoyed their pancakes!! I look forward to seeing their happy faces for Ice Cream tomorrow!

We have added an item to our Arts’ Night pictures. We are asking that each student bring in a recent AND a childhood picture…it can be of any stage (baby, toddler, young child, etc.) Please send in all pictures no later than April 20th.
The photos I have gotten so far are extremely cute!!

Our current total for our Spring Fundraiser is $8000!!! WOOHOO SJA!! Tomorrow one lucky student will get to pie a teacher. The student who brings in the most amount of money tomorrow will get to sit at their teacher's chair. Today, Jaya, was lucky enough to put makeup on Mr. Rozario. Sami was the lucky student who got to Nurf gun Mr. Foster. Let’s keep those funds coming in!

Math:
Today we had small gallery walk of our mosaic tiles that students have created. A lot of students had great comments about the tiles made by their peers. I think that these tiles would be a great piece to add to the Art's Night projects that will be displayed.
We also began a new unit about Pattern and Numbers in Geometry. Today we began by looking at patterns in multiplication and how we can rearrange factors when multiplying so that make it easier for us, as well as, how to find missing factors.

Language:
Today we had a read aloud with the story Clark the Shark. We are beginning our new language topic of Narrative writing. We touched upon the idea of plot today and how we can use a diagram to explain how the majority of stories are written. Students are encouraged to bring in picture books so we can analyze their plot them tomorrow!

UOI: Government
Today we had a short lesson talking about what it meant to be a Canadian Citizen. We also read a few pages that discussed things about Canadian citizenship and students highlighted words that they found to be inspiring and important. We will look at these words more closely tomorrow!

Everyone hard at work to find inspiring words!

17/04/2018

Good evening parents and students,

I hope everyone had a lovely day yesterday, I know students enjoyed their day off school! Today we had some might cool pirates in class!

Tomorrow is Pancake Day!

Our current total for our Spring Fundraiser is $6000!!! WOOHOO SJA!! That means that one lucky student will get to give Mr. Rozario a makeover he will not soon forget. Let’s keep those funds coming in!

Please start bringing in you pledges! The student with the most pledges brought in by tomorrow will have the change to shoot Mr. Foster with a nerf gun! I know that many students are excited about this one! So bring in those pledges! Students can always add to the pledges throughout the week. I'd love to see someone from our class win one of the prizes!!

Math:
Students had the chance to work on their summative today and I was impressed with the amount of work students completed. The good copy of their summative is due tomorrow. That means that their good copy mosaic is fully coloured and their written component is either typed or written in neat cursive. Both of these items, their rubric, and their rough copy are to be submitted tomorrow morning. Some of these summatives look amazing!

Language:
Today students completed their literacy circle. I was very unimpressed to find out that several students had not completed their roles for homework and that others did not fully finish their role. We also went over how to have a successful discussion within our circles. I was seeing that many groups were not having all members participate! Discussion Moderates also need to make sure that they are asking thought provoking questions that will allow for various opinions from students.

UOI: Government
Today students looked at what it means to be a Canadian citizen. First I gave out sample questions that would potentially be seen on a citizenship test! Many students found it hard to answer them all correctly!
We then watched a few VIDEOS from the government website that were created to showcase various people explaining what it means to them to be a Canadian citizen. I have asked students to go home and write a few sentences about what they think it means to be a Canadian citizen. They are also welcome to ask parents and siblings what it means to them!

Music in class! The students are sounding great!

Math:
Students continued working on their math summative projects. I had a chance to conference with every student and look at what they were creating. It was great to see that all students were on the right track! Some of these murals are going to be extremely creative. Here are a look at a few rough copies!

UOI: Government
Students had work time to complete the rough copy of their persuasive letters. If there rough copy was completed and I read it over they were allowed to take it home and type up a good copy of their letter (or write in cursive). I have also said that for those students who put in a lot of effort/produced high quality work, and are willing to put extra time (during a recess) to make their letter more formal, we will be mailing the letters to the correct members of council, members of provincial parliament and members of parliament.

Language:
Students are to complete their literacy roles this weekend. Make sure students are reading the instructions on the page when completing their roles.

 In Class:

Math:
Today students started their math summative!  Ms. Walls and Ms. Downey are thinking about creating murals on their bulletin boards but cannot think of what to make. They want the student's help. Using their knowledge about transformations, line of symmetry and rotational symmetry, they must create a small example of what they think would be a great mural for the boards. They will then create a written component that explains exactly what they did so that the teachers could recreate it for the larger board.
We looked at two videos for examples of how to create tessellations and tiling patterns that use rotational symmetry:
The work done in class was awesome today and students did not want to stop!!  Here is a picture of a few rough copies students have begun.

Students had some tiling fun in class during an indoor recess!

Language:
Today we did our daily reading comprehension question for our novel study. Tomorrow students will once again have their literacy circle roles for weekend homework. I once again want to stress that the Word Wizard role has slightly changed and students need to read the paper to find out what they must do.
Next week we will begin our last DRA's of the year.

UOI:
Students had lots of class time to work on their Take a Stand formative. I was very impressed with the amount of dedication some students have within this project. Since I have seen great work and passion, I have informed students that if they would like, and if their letter is of high quality, we can try and mail them to the correct people and hope to receive a letter in response!!
