Good evening parents and students!

Tomorrow is TRACK and FIELD Day!! There is also a bake sale and freezies will be on sale for $1!!
Students are to come to school in their gym uniform, bring a hat, water bottle and sunscreen!

I would like to first say a huge congratulations to both Lucas and Saanvi who came second in the Spelling Competitions. It was great to see their class peers cheer them on and wish them the best of luck.

Secondly, I want to say how proud I am of the students for waiting and watching the entire spelling bee. It showed a lot of integrity and principle! I know that it mean a late lunch for students, and that was not predicted, but it was great to see the grade 5 classes support all the Spelling Bee contestants.

Since the spelling bee went so long and the students were well behaved, I decided to have some fun in the sun! We had a long recess and they practiced their triple jump for tomorrow's track and field

We were also able to cover some Language in the morning. We looked at examples students had written with the last two days, peer assessed them and as a class discussed these assessments. It was great to see that students are really using their imaginations! The main theme of improvement that I saw was for students to add more detail about setting and character, as well as making sure they follow proper plot structure. Below is a photo students can look at and review for plot structure!

Good afternoon parents and students!
Today is the big day. Our Arts’ Night performance is finally here. All students are required to be back at The City Church by 6:15 PM in full costume for our evening performance, which begins at 7:00 PM.

Tomorrow morning we will be having our Inter-School Spelling Bee! I wish luck to the students in our class that will be participating.

There is a bake sale taking place tomorrow and Friday.
Friday is also track and field. Please ensure that students are in their full SJA gym uniform and are wearing sunscreen and a hat, as we will be outside all day. They should also bring a couple bottles of water. Freezies will be available for sale at the end of the day for $1.00

 Math:
Students began looking into fractions! Even though we were at the church today we were able to get in a new math lesson about equivalent fractions. Here is a video that can help students at home.

Language:
Students edited their short stories and peer edited. They are to go home and perfect their stories so that when I look at them I will see a higher level of thinking. This is in preparation for their OWA which will be this coming Monday (June 4).

Good evening parents and students!

Today was our Dress Rehearsal for SJA students of Arts Night. Tomorrow we will be at the City Church all day as our last rehearsals are upon us! Tomorrow Night is the final performance for all parents and families to attend! We ask that students arrive at 6:15. The show start at 7pm.
Students must come dressed in their formal outfits!

Math:
The students have worked super hard today! We started the day with going over the key things needed on our math test and then the students wrote the test. After the students finished the test, they continued with their UOI Coding tutorials.

Language:
In language, we also reviewed plot and our stories. We also looked at the success criteria for our OWA which will be on Monday. Students created a note listing the criteria, and I made an anchor chart for in class.
Tonight, the students use their organizers to write a story. The narrative stories are due tomorrow.

Remember to:

  • add descriptions (using senses)
  • add metaphors and similes
  •  make sure that the plot builds to the climax
  • make sure that "problem" gets solved at the end
  • SHOW NOT TELL your story

Dear parents and students,

Today, we were super busy rehearsing at City Church for Arts' Night, which is this WEDNESDAY. Before we went to the theatre, the students got a chance to code and problem solve with each other. At the theatre, we worked on language.

Since we did not have a chance to look at math, please review the review answers and any practice worksheets from Saturday's blog. Tomorrow is the final test for this unit!

In Language, the students worked in partners to write stories about a character at a performance. The students had to add depth to their character as well as build their setting using the 5 senses. Afterwards, the students read their stories to the two classes and we gave feedback to the different groups (stars and wishes). For homework tonight, the students have to create a story by filling out a graphic organizer (front and back).
The scenario of the story is summer. The students should start off with filling out the setting, then build their character and then finally fill in their plot. Tomorrow, the students will be writing stories with these sheets.

Good afternoon,
I hope that all families are enjoying this lovely weather!
I wanted to post a few hepful things for students for Math over the weekend.

For homework students were to complete an extra math practice on volume and surface area of prisms. Here is the link to the answers, the students must show their equations, step-by-step answers, as well as have their units in order to get full marks.
Students were also given the chance to pick up some extra practice sheets, but I noticed that many did not take that opportunity. However, I wanted to post  the digital copy of the sheets just in case they change their mind over the weekend. I suggest students try a few of the questions from the many sheets as practice :)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Friday 25 May 2018

25/05/2018

Good afternoon parents and students,

Arts Night is fast approaching! Monday will be our full dress rehearsal! Students are asked to come to school in their costume (formal dress clothes) or bring it with them to change into first thing Monday. This costume will be used for the following two days.
Our first rehearsal today was outside in the nice weather!

Math:
In class today we went over the answers for the test review, we looked at every question!
We also did additional practice and made it into a fun game! Students got really engaged in the competitive math game!

We also did additional surface area and volume questions as they can be very tricky!
Students were also given the option of taking home extra practice sheets for over the weekend. Our test is Tuesday May 29. On Monday we will be ale to go over any extra questions students may have! Please also review the last few blogs for extra assistance at home!

Language:
In Language we talked about the importance of character. We went over the different aspects of a character that an author needs to think about when creating a character. I then gave students a graphic organizer and asked them to create a character that they would find in a school (some students created characters that were  young students, others did teachers, one even made a janitor). On the back of the character sheet is has space for character development. In this pace they had to think of an emergency that might happen at school and how the character would act and feel before and then after the event. This was done in class and for homework they were asked to then write a quick short story (2 paragraphs or more) about the event and the character (make sure it has a beginning, middle and end).

UOI:Coding
In coding we looked that some of the projects students made. On the 'create' project page there is a share button in the top right of the screen, by pressing this I am able to see the work students have done. I ended up assigning six more tutorials for homework, therefore meaning they should have the first 9 completed for Monday.

Dear parents and students,

Just a reminder that tomorrow is casual day!

Today's weather was lovely!! Students really enjoyed their time outside!

Today we once again practiced our Arts Night performance, students must bring in their permission forms in tomorrow.

Math:
In math, we checked our answers for surface area and then the students completed a review packet. As a class we worked through 2 examples of how to find the surface area of a rectangular prism and 2 examples of how to calculate the surface area of a triangular prism. The test will be next Tuesday.  Here are pictures of the anchor charts with overviews of the concepts that the students have learned.  The students will be provided with an answer key and extra practice tomorrow.

Language:
In the afternoon, we looked at setting in a narrative story and how the best settings use descriptions from our 5 senses. We also write a note about Simile, Metaphor, and Personification.Students were then responsible for choosing an image below and write about the setting using their 5 sense. If this was not done in class it is for homework.

Tomorrow, we will continue from here, so students should complete their setting examples.

UOI:Coding
In UOI, we first completed presentations on Project 101. Afterwards, the students were introduced to Scratch, the software we will be using for coding. Here is the video we watched in class that introduced the topic. The students created accounts and starting practicing. For homework tonight, the students need to complete tutorials 1-3 in the guide menu. Here is a step-by-step guide to the Slides from today in case students were away or get confused. ***please make sure you start a new project for each new tutorial you are completing***

23/05/2018

Dear parents and students,

Our Arts Night rehearsals are in full swing! Throughout this week and next students will be practicing performances for the event, which is only one week away! Tomorrow we will be talking about costumes and what students will need to be wearing for our dress rehearsals and final performance. Students, please make sure to practice your song!

Math:
Today we learned our last topic for this unit, SURFACE AREA of rectangular and triangular prisms. Here is a video that explains each of the concepts. We also looked at examples in class today, here are some concept review examples.

The students may choose to use an equation, use a net and labels or do both in order to solve the problem, however they must show their equations used, all calculations and final units with their answer in order to get full marks. The final test for this unit will be next Tuesday.
Language:
In language, we briefly looked into how to properly describe the setting of a narrative story. The students had to describe scenarios using all their senses. Here is an example below.

Tomorrow students will be complete an in class writing workshop to learn about creating a powerful setting!
UOI:Coding
In UOI today, we watched presentations for Project 101. The students have all done a great job of not only researching different coding programs and explaining them in their presentation but also of trying out a new software and creating beautiful presentations. The links to the presentations can be found in the Classroom. Please go and have a look at the different presentations (only copy and paste the link please).
Ramsey was our first presenter of the day!
