Good evening parents and students!

Happy Valentine's Day from Grade 5!

Today was a day filled with red, pink, white, friendship and of course some sweet treats to take home!
.... and some actual school work too :)

Tomorrow we are having the final day of Speech competitions as our top presenters face off with the top from The Maples Academy.

Math:
Today we had a close look at the difference between continuous data (data that can be measured on a scale: ie Temperature) and discrete data (data that can only have certain values: ie Days of the week). We also discussed that when it asks if there are any trends, that it means if we see any patterns happening in the graph.
Here is a VIDEO for students who are struggling to remember the differences.
We also looked at how to draw and interpret data. We did the first question as a class so that I could make sure students are remembering to include a scale, a title, and labels for every type of graph.
Another thing we discussed as a class is that we use different graphs for different reasons (as shown on the past two anchor charts made). A line graph is used to show a change in data over time. Whereas a bar graph can be used to compare groups of data.
There were several questions, over three pages, to be done for homework.

Language:
Our spelling test for lesson 19 is tomorrow. I had talked to several students this morning who had not yet practiced their spelling. It is important that they practice spelling every night in order to prepare for the test at the end of the week.

UOI: Human Body:
Today we began our human body stations: we had a close look at the Respiratory system !

The BODY stations were: Station A: The BODY World Wide (technology station)
Station B: BODY Burning Questions (Test each others knowledge)

Station C: AnyBODY comprehend
  • Complete the worksheets, they used the handout made by the other group to help them answer the sheet
Station D: Move your BODY (hands-on activities)

  • Students completed a lung capacity exercise by blowing air through a tube and into a container that was filled with water. Students soon realized that the air pushed the water out of the container, which then showed them how big their lung capacity was.  (I was helping run this station so unfortunately I could not take pictures with my wet hands!)
Over the next few days, they will complete other station activities for the other body systems.

We also had the chance to have reading buddies today, the students are amazing with the younger ones and it makes me so happy to see!

13/02/2018

Good evening parents and students!
Today had a very fun morning filled with pancakes! Students were extremely enthusiastic when it came to our pancake eating competition.
After all the madness of pancakes, we got straight to work!

Tomorrow is also a special day as it is Spirit Day for Valentine's Day! Students are encouraged to dress in white, red, and pink!

Math:
Today we continued to look at graphs but instead focused on Line Graphs! We looked at how line graphs are used to show changes over time. I spent lots of time making sure that students understood that when creating a line graph I have to make sure my scales are on lines. These lines are what we use to plot our points. Once our points (each point represents a piece of data) we have to connect them with a straight line. This line helps us see different changes over the time periods.
I also spent time at the beginning of the lesson to once again look at intervals so that students had a good understanding.

I was also super impressed with how well students are beginning to interpret graphs all on their own!

UOI: Human Body
Students today finished and presented their handouts about their systems! It was clear to see that students have become very knowledgeable about the systems they researched and were able to pass on that knowledge to their peers. This is a great lead into what we will be starting tomorrow! We will be completing stations for each system so that students understands what organs are in each systems and what they do for our body.
Students also went home with a field trip permission form. YES ANOTHER FIELD TRIP! YAY!
We will be going to the Science Center and have signed up to take part in a workshop about the Human Body!
We are looking for parent volunteers, so if you are interested in joining us that day please fill out the form accordingly!

12/02/2018

Good evening parents and students!
I hope that everyone had a chance to enjoy the lovely snow this weekend. Please make sure to send your children with appropriate winter wear as it is still very cold out at recesses.

Math:
I noticed that some students were struggling to remember the Mean, Median, and Mode so I took some time today to reinforce the learning and created an anchor chart for the classroom.
We looked at bar graphs and what parts need to be included when drawing them. We also looked at how to use appropriate scales (start at___, counting up by____, end at____) when creating graphs with both small and large ranges. Students also learn about what Intervals mean in relation to graphing (creating equal groups for the data).

Language:
We completed our third literacy circle today, only one section left for our novel! Several students forgot their folders at school, which is rather disappointing as it was one of the only things given for homework over the weekend.

UOI: Human Body
Students today will begin our long range individual summative called THE HEALTHY NEW YOU! This project will have students tracking their lifestyles (food and exercise habits) over the course of three weeks. After the first week students will begin to make healthy changes to their lifestyle and will start writing journals about how they are feeling with the new changes.
For the next week students are to track what they eat and what exercises they do each day. Since we do not have school Friday and Monday, students were given their tracker sheets for three week so that they can continues to tract over weekends and holidays.

Students also had a chance to complete their Systems Handouts.

Notes:

-100th Day of School is tomorrow. It is also Pancake Tuesday tomorrow.
-Valentine’s Day Spirit is happening on Wednesday. Please dress up in your Valentine’s Day colours.
-This upcoming weekend is Family Day, so there will be no school Friday or Monday!

Good evening parents and students!

The day of speeches has come and gone. I am very impressed with how our representatives did as well as how all students behaved during the various speeches that they saw. I know that it was a long day but students had the opportunity to learn about new topics from their peers.
Since today was an odd routine, we have moved the spelling test to Monday. Please practice spelling over the weekend!

Our grade 5 representatives anxiously waiting for their turn:

Our classes presenters:

Congratulations to our grade 5 first, second, and third place winners:

Moreover, I want to congratulate all students on the hard work and passion that they placed into their speeches over the past month. Every single student should be as proud of themselves as I am of them.

08/02/2018

Good evening parents and students!
Tomorrow is our big day of presentations. Students need to be dressed in full uniform (no hoodies). Those presenting please wear your academic tie.

Since the day is not of our normal routine, and we will be watching speeches all day, the spelling test has been moved to Monday.

A note from Ms. Helen, our Admissions Coordinator - As you are aware, the re-registration season is upon us and we have recently sent home packages with your child(ren). Math:
Today we introduced Mean, Median, and Mode as a way of interpreting information from data sets. I wanted to show this VIDEO in class but unfortunately there were some technical difficulties. Math Antics does a really good job of describing exactly what was taught in class.
We had our own little investigation into the shoe sizes of our class! First students were asked to read our their shoe size for our data set. We then found the mean (average shoe size), median (middle number) and mode (most occurred number). We found that if a shoe is found outside of the classroom and it is a size 6 or 5/7, maybe the first place to ask would be Ms.Walls.

Language:
We have been continuing with our Ticket out of Door reading comprehension questions for each chapter of Hatchet. I have encouraged students to make sure that they are really reading and understanding the events in the chapter. Doing this will help them answer the daily questions so that they don't have to do the work duirng a recess.

UOI: Human Body
Students spent lots of time working in their groups to complete their handout. All groups finished their rough copies and two even began the good copy. I have given the option of either having students do the good copy by hand (making sure it is neat) or bringing in a device (laptop) that has the ability to open google docs. I have a blank template on google docs that can be typed and altered for their system. (at least one student in every group would need to have access to google docs for this to be an option)
I am excited to have finished handouts and see the students become the teacher.

NOTES:

Due tomorrow is this form and money for Cookie Decorating!

Good evening!

What a snowy morning we had! I hope everyone was able to get to school, work and home safely! Though we did not have gym today, many students took advantage of the fluffy snow and got lots of exercise outside.

A note from Ms. Helen, our Admissions Coordinator - As you are aware, the re-registration season is upon us and we have recently sent home packages with your child(ren). Math:
We began a new Unit of Data Management. With that came a per-assessment of their prior knowledge. Students will be looking at how to create, read and interpret various types of graphs.
Today we learned about how different graphs can help you represent data in various ways. We can use these graphs to help us infer and analyze results. Two words we learned today were infer (to gather information) and range (the difference between the greatest number and the least number). Students were also told to use a ruler to help them line up the data from both the x and y axis.

Language:
Today we took a small break from language so that we could give more time to our UOI's and Math.

UOI:
Today concluded our unit on Biodiversity. Students completed their last summative and were to send their commercials to me for grading and so that we can present them tomorrow or Friday.

Today also began our new Unit on the Human Body: Who are we?
A short video was used to show students that our bodies are made up of tons of cells, that these cells then make up tissues, which make up organs. We looked at how our body is made up of different systems and how these systems need to work together. Within these systems we looked at how there are various organs that are needed for the operation of the system. Students first task is to make their own handout of a specific system (either cardiovascular, nervous, digestive, or reparatory). Ms. Khan and I created an example handout for students to follow that was about the musculoskeletal system. These handouts will include the function, concepts, diseases, operations and other important information of their system. This task is to be done in class as it is a group project.

Good evening parents and students!

Today was a day of stress and excitement! Congratulations to all the students today as they presented their speeches in front of 34 other students. I was so impressed with how many students were fully memorized, had clear loud voices, and were enthusiastic. Students should be very proud of themselves!
I was also very happy with the behaviour throughout the day. I know that there was a lot to sit through but most students were supportive and very attentive to those delivering their speech.
Also a big thank you to parents who helped their children practice at home!

Math:
I have not marked the quizzes yet as the day was very full. I hope to have them marked and sent home on Thursday. However, from what I saw as students were working, we should be seeing a lot of high test scores.

Speech Winners:
Saanvi
Ramsey
Teni

These three students will be presenting their speeches on Friday as part of our school speech competition. Parents are more than welcome to join.
