28/02/2018

Good evening parents and students!
What a lovely day this was for being outside! The students were thrilled with the sun and warmth.
I cannot believe that tomorrow is March!!!

Math:
Students first began math by completing their Healthy Survey. I was very happy to see all students created properly labeled and titled graphs!
We also did our Mean, Median, Mode, Range quiz. Almost all students got perfect! The main issues were that students either incorrectly added up the data (but I could tell that they had the knowledge of what to do), or forgot to order the numbers from least to greatest before finding the Median. Overall, great job!
Finally, we began a new unit, Probability! Today students looked at the likelihood of outcomes (using the terms likely, unlikely, certain and impossible) and how to calculate probability using fractions. Students also learnt how to use tables to find all possible probability outcomes and probability numbers.
Since probability is a very small unit, we will most likely be having a quiz next Tuesday.

Language:
Today we finished our Novel Study with the creation of a concrete poem (shape poetry that does not rhyme)! I had students answer the question "What one item would you want with your plane crashed in a forest and you were alone?" A common answer as a Hatchet, as they thought Brian made it seem like  super useful tool, whereas others thought about different items that would have been extremely helpful in the situation. Once they had their item chosen and sentences written, they were to draw the outline of their shape, write the words around it and then colour it in! These will be posted outside of our classroom sometime this week!

 UOI: Human Body
The building began! It was great to see how focused students were on their projects today. The majority of our time this week will be dedicated to completing the build of our models and the written component. By the end of Friday students are expected to be done so that they can rehearse what they want to say about their model during the exhibit. Therefore, it is important that students bring all materials so that they do not waste time in class.

Our builders hard at work!

Good evening parents and students!

Today students had reading buddies! It is always so great to see how sweet and caring the Grade 5's are towards their reading buddies.

Tomorrow is Casual Day... I cannot believe it is the end of the month already... time has really flown by!

Math:
In math students continued with their Healthy Survey Project. One concern that I had while working through the package was that a lot of students have forgotten what Range, Mean, Median, and Mode are. I want to see which students have grasped the concept and which need more practice, so we will be have a quick exit card quiz (it will only be the four questions for one set of data). Below I have attached the anchor chart that is in class so that students can take a look tonight. Otherwise, students worked well in class and are on the graphing stage of the summative!

 UOI: Human Body

Students today completed their Body Systems Quiz. I have not marked all of them yet, but the ones I have looked at were done very well!
We also completed the planning stage of our Body System Model, and some students even started building! Please make sure that students and parents are looking together at the model being created so that all materials can be brought in for tomorrow. Tomorrow we will have twice the amount of time to work on our models!

Finally, students must still be completing their daily food and exercise tracker, along with their daily journals. Many students have really improved their journal entries. I want to continue seeing students commenting on what they eat and setting goals for themselves.  Two questions should also be answered every night, these answers should be detailed (one than a few words/one sentence).

26/02/2018

Good evening parents and students!

Apparently my blog from Friday did not post correctly. Here are some pictures for the wet, but fun trip that we had!

Math:
Today students created/finished their survey questions, created possible answers, and began to survey their peers about heathy eating/ exercise habits. Tomorrow students will complete their survey and begin to create their graphs to display the data. Once the graph is completed they will be finding the mean, median, mode, and range of the data. From these two things, students are to interpret understandings that the data represents.

UOI: Human Body:
Students completed the next steps of their design cycle. Many students were able to show a great understanding of the function and components of their system. However, it was also clear that others need to do extra research at home to better understand the parts of their system so that they can explain it to others. Students are to bring in materials for the model that they chose from their brainstorming sessions in class.
Tomorrow will also be our Body Systems Quiz. In class we went over every question and discussed the correct answer as a class. Students are to go home and go over the information that they know in preparation for the quiz.

Students really enjoyed the warm sun at recess!

NOTES:

To clarify, the soccer tournament that the grade 5 students can attend is March 7th. They can still bring in money though the form was due Friday the 23rd.

22/02/208

Good evening parents and students,

TOMORROW IS OUR SKI TRIP!!!!! The time of the trip is different than the last.

PLEASE NOTE: Students are expected to arrive at the school no later than 7:45am. The pick up time is still approximately 4:30pm.

Please make sure that students dress warm (gloves, snowpants, jacket, scarf, etc.), bring an extra pair of clothes, and have a litter-less lunch (or money to purchase food).

All homework assigned today will be due Monday February 26th.

This morning students had to pleasure of watching Cinderfella! Students were constantly laughing and learnt some great morals along the way: Never Give Up, Be Kind to Others, and Try Your Best.

Math:
Students were introduced to their graphing summative! We will be conducting surveys that ask people about their healthy eating and exercise. Today students came up with questions and the possible answers for their survey. Monday we will begin to survey our peers. Students have the option of creating a google form to track their survey (this requires access to a device, so please bring in devices!) Once we have all of our data, we will begin to graph (Tuesday) and make inferences!

Language:
Students completed their OWA assessments today. I have not yet marked them, but as I took a peak at them I was very impressed with the level of writting done by most students!

UOI:
Today was filled with UOI! Students began the day coming up with questions for our Quiz on Tuesday February 27th. The groups created very nice questions! The students are asked to complete these questions (with help from the handouts and internet) for Monday. As a class we will take up the answers Monday so that students have all the correct information that they can study from for the Quiz.

Our final Body Summative (Body World Exhibit) was also introduced today. Over the weekend students are to create ideas for their model. In class on Monday we will be looking at their ideas, drawing examples and choosing our final model idea!

NOTES:

A note from Oakwood – On Friday, March 29, Oakwood Academy will be holding A Silent Dance. A ‘Silent Dance’ is a dance in which students are given individual headphones where they can listen to various types of music while controlling the volume.  This dance is an amazing way to foster inclusion and provide an opportunity for everyone to participate in a school dance. 21/02/2018

Good evening parents and students!

I am really hoping that the weather will be in our favour for the ski trip Friday! So far Glen Eden has still been open as they produce their own snow! If anything changes

TOMORROW IS ANTI-BULLYING DAY. We are asking that students wear pink shirts for awareness and in honour of the day.

We also have our Lesson 20 Spelling test tomorrow!

Math:
Today we had lots of sheets to work on, but they are several small concepts that students need to know before we move on to our summative project. We discussed what primary and secondary data was and when each should be used. We also looked at what Bias means (favour for one thing over another), how it can been seen in graphs and what we can then interpret from the graph. Finally, we looked at conducting surveys! It is important to know how to ask appropriate survey questions, survey the right group of people (or sample), and graph it without Bias. Though there are many sheets for homework, a lot of the questions have been done in class or should be quick to answer.

Language:
I was extremely impressed with the work ethic of the students this afternoon. Today we did a practice OWA announcements and it was incredible to see the big difference in the level of all student work. Students also had effective conversations with students about what their strengths and weaknesses were in their writing. I have high hopes for the post-assessment tomorrow!

UOI: Human Body
Unfortunately today I noticed that a lot of students had not completed an aspect of their homework (some had even lost their work!). They were to have completed the worksheets for Respiratory system and Digestive system that they had begun in class. Since this was not done, it is due tomorrow and if not done for then I will be taking away gym in order to finish. Another worksheet was given today and is an additional piece of homework.  It is important students are doing their homework in time because we are going to be having a quiz for Human Body systems this coming Tuesday and I want to ensure students have plenty of time to study.
In better news, I was very impressed with how well students worked within their groups for our last systems station (The Cardiovascular System). It is great to see students using their inquiry and thinker IB profile skills.

20/02/2018

Good evening parents and students!

I hope that everyone had a lovely long weekend had was able to spend time with family on Monday.
Today students participated in the Jump Rope for Heart event. Students skipped rope for 40 minutes, they were very energized and sweaty by the end of it! It was great to hear students talking about their heart rate; I can tell that they are really paying attention to our UOI lessons!

Three different forms were sent home today, please make sure to take a look at them.
One form is actually due tomorrow. We apologize about the lateness of it going home.
Thursday is our Anti-Bullying Day. We are asking for students to wear a pink shirt to support this day. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to watch Cinderfella, a play put on by Mike McMurty. Permission forms were sent home today and will be due back tomorrow along with $4.

Math:
Today we looked at the Mystery Pictures that were done for homework. For students that needed extra practice, I gave them another night to work on it. In class students began colouring in their pictures and they are starting to look really wonderful.
We also looked at a new graph: Scatter plots. We learnt that scatter plots are used to show how sets of data increase/decrease and that when looking at the graph we can see trends from the data plots.

For homework students are to complete the page about scatter plots and another page that talked about interpreting data, as that is a major importance within Data Management.

Language:
We had our last literacy circle today for our novel Hatchet. Students did very well over the weeks, it was great to see such an improvement in their role work. We are not completely done with Hatchet yet, we will be doing a final summative project in the coming days.

Today students also spent time looking at the rubric used for our OWA Persuasive Announcement assessment. Students saw how they did for their pre-test and as a class we worked on making success criteria that would help us do better on our next OWA Persuasive Announcement:

Knowledge and Understanding:
- include an introduction and conclusion
-thank the audience at the end
-clearly explain the problem
-clearly state your opinion
-provide solutions to the problem

Thinking:
-create detailed solutions
-include detailed support for each solution
-include support for the main idea throughout
-include different perspectives (self, teacher, principal)

Communication:
-proper grammar and spelling
-variety of sentence length
-organized ideas/support
-age-appropriate and persuasive words used

Application:
-make connections (self, real-life, others) that are relevant and specific
-provide tips and easy to do solutions

Our OWA post-assessment will be done Thursday February 22.

UOI: Human Body
Today we did not have time for UOI. However, students were introduced to the new part of our Healthy New You summative. Students are to complete daily journals that summarize their health (food and exercise) that day. They are also responsible for answering two questions a day from the provided list.

15/02/2018

Good evening parents and students!
I hope that everyone is excited for their 4 day weekend and have some great things planned for Family Day!

Today students had the privilege to listen to the top speeches of both SJA and The Maples. Students heard various stories, persuasive speeches, and informative speeches. Our routine was very different today because of these speeches and students were even allowed to eat their lunch in class!

Students also earned some free time today, which of course was spent on devices. It is great to see students being rewarded for the great respect that is seen for teachers and fellow students.

Math:
Today students learned about coordinate grids and ordered pairs. We discussed how the ordered pairs are listed as horizontal (x) axis first and vertical (y) axis second.... just like in the alphabet! Students were given some fun math tasks for homework this weekend.
One worksheet is a riddle puzzle and the other involved them plotting ordered pairs and connecting them in order with lines so as to create an image. Once their image is completed they are to colour them!
If a student is unsure whether they have done it right, have them bring the page to school uncoloured and I will look at it.

Language:
Today students completed their last ticket out the door reading comprehension question! Over our long weekend, students are to read the epilogue and complete their last Literacy circle!
There will be a summative for the novel introduced on Tuesday February 20th.
Since next week is very short (family day and ski trip), I have already assigned spelling lesson 20 for homework. The next spelling test will be on the Thursday.

UIO: Human Body
Today the BODY stations were about the Digestive System: Station A: The BODY World Wide (technology station)

Station B: BODY Burning Questions (Test each others knowledge)

Station C: AnyBODY comprehend

  • Complete the worksheets, they used the handout made by the other group
Station D: Move your BODY (hands-on activities)

  • Complete a digestion activity using bread and water to simulate what happens to food in our digestive system. The students found the end results rather funny as it looked similar to what our body normally releases as waste (POO!)

Here are some pictures from the stations. Over the next few days, they will complete other station activities for the other body systems.

Notes:

A note about Jump Rope for Heart - This event is fast approaching! Please make sure students are finishing their donation collecting this weekend as Tuesday February 20th is our event!
