Good evening parents and students,

This is a reminder for parents that students are expected to have laptops for our final UOI and that time is almost upon us! We ask that students have laptops ready for May 7th. If this is a concern please email me.

UOI: Government
Students worked in their groups on their presentation slide shows and good copy of their flag today in class. The next step will be to write a 3 minute speech that their leader must present on election day. We will be looking at example speeches from people like Justin Trudeau for inspiration!
For our UOI summative presentations, parents are welcome to attend at 2pm on May 3rd. Actual presentations will begin at 2:20pm however parents are welcome to arrive at 2:00pm and take a look/ask questions at the display tables. After the presentations and voting, students are allowed to leave with their parents.

Language:
Today we worked on DRAs. Students will have one short lesson time dedicated towards completing their DRA. After this point they will either stay in for gym or need to be assessed at a lower level.

Math:
In class today we reviewed input output machines and how they show patterns. Students seemed to blast through the math sheet and so I assigned a few questions from the math textbook.  I really liked hearing students recognize the different patterns they noticed in the graphs and in the columns of the table. Here is a video students can use a refresher for how to use input output machines.

At the end of the day students we had some surprise reading buddy time!

Notes:

A note about Spelling Bee:
The Spelling Bee is right around the corner! Students were sent home with an information sheet and their spelling list that will be used for the in class competition.

Grade 6 exhibition:

Dear Parents and Teachers of St. Jude's Academy,

We (Rishaan, Jonathan, and Lucas) have an exhibition project on animal agriculture. Have you ever thought about how much water it takes to make one hamburger? Well, the answer is 660 gallons of water. That is equal to showering for about two months straight! As part of our action we have decided to encourage people to go meatless on Mondays during the month of May. We are asking our St. Jude’s Family to join us and pledge to go meatless on Mondays, and make a positive impact on things it affects such as climate change! If you decide to help us by going meatless on Mondays, then you could save 1100 gallons of water, 45 pounds of grain, 30 square feet of forested land, ten pounds of carbon dioxide, and one animal’s life. We hope you decide to help us stop animal agriculture, and go meatless on Mondays. If you decide to go meatless on Mondays, kindly return the attached pledge form signed in your child’s agenda before April 30, 2018!

Thank you
Lucas, Jonathan, and Rishaan

This is a reminder for parents that students are expected to have laptops for our final UOI and that time is almost upon us! We ask that students have laptops ready for May 7th. If this is a concern please email me.

Today was a great morning at Kidsports! Those who attended had a lot of fun exploring the jungle gym, playing at the arcade, and participating in other sports!

Believe it or not but that blur is Manisha on the zip-line!

Those who stayed behind had a fun UOI lesson with Ms. Downey, they played trivia and had tricky crosswords to complete, all about Canada's government!

For our UOI summative presentations, parents are welcome to attend at 2pm on May 3rd. Actual presentations will begin at 2:20pm however parents are welcome to arrive at 2:00pm and take a look/ask questions at the display tables. Good evening parents and students,

Today the students had a great time celebrating Miss Victoria as it was her last day with us. She will be dearly missed!

Tomorrow is the Kids Sports Trip (9am-12noon) for those who brought in the form and money during our Spring Fundraiser. Those attending are to be dressed in gym uniform for the trip and have proper athletic shoes.

Students have also begun practicing for the Spelling Bee during recess! There is a lot of excitement for this competition, which is great to see! Here they are during recess trying out their spelling words for this weeks lesson with the proper spelling bee format.

Students also had a presentation from the Grade 6's for their exhibition. Both grade 5 classes were combined and students were very engaged!

UOI:Government
This morning students once again were in their groups for Build Your Own Country. Students have really gotten into the swing of things and are making great progress. I continue to encourage students to add detail as they should be able to answer any questions someone might have about the country they are trying to create. Students are encouraged to bring in their devices so they can being working on their powerpoints/slide presentation.

Language:
We continued with our DRA's today and hope to have them done this week.

Math:
Today we went over Representing Patterns and looked specifically at growing patterns. Students impressed me with how much they remembered about growing patterns and how to create rules for these patterns.

Notes from the Grade 6 exhibition.

Dear parents/ guardians,

We are Grade 6 students doing a project called exhibition. Our topic is child neglect. For our action we chose to do a clothing donation for the children that may have experienced neglect in our community. We will be donating all of the gently used clothing to the CAS and local charities. If you would like to donate any gently used clothing please place them in the box labeled Clothing Donations for the CAS and Surrounding charities. It can be found by the SJA back door where you come into the school in the morning. The last day to make a donation is Wednesday, April 26.

Sincerely,

Alexis, Alex and Wael (Grade 6)

24/04/2018

Good evening parents and students!

TOMORROW IS CASUAL DAY!
We are also saying a sad goodbye to our teaching assistant Miss Victoria. She has been an amazing help in the class. tomorrow we will have a small farewell party at the end of the day with fun games!

As a reminder for students who gave money for the Kid Sports trip: We will be attending the trip Thursday April 26th from 9-12. Students are expected to wear their gym uniforms if going on the trip.

UOI:Government
This morning students worked hard on their Build Your Own Country summative. I sat with almost every group and had a discussion about the type of government they chose for their new country. I want to see lots of detail from groups as it was something I noticed lacking from every group. I am stressing to students that they will be presenting about their country and trying to convection people to vote them into power. They should be all-knowing about their country and ready to answer any question!

Math:
Today we looked at Tiling Patterns and also managed to look at Graphing Patterns. Students quickly realized that these lessons were review of some things we learned over the last two units! It is lovely to see students using their knowledge from past classes :) If students are finding tonight's homework tricky they are welcome to look to the past units we have learned!
I was also super impressed by Saanvi who was able to complete the challenge I set out last night! She was able to recite the first 25 numbers of the Fibonacci sequence! Bravo!

Language:
Tomorrow we will continue with our DRAs.

23/04/2018

Good evening parents and students,
I hope that everyone enjoyed the warm weather this weekend, I know I did!

Students enjoyed their popcorn today! It was a nice treat for second lunch!

UOI
This morning we continued with our UOI: Build your own country. It was great to hear all the different names that the groups have created for their new countries. I was also very impressed with the mottos that groups created. Many of them were inspiring and motivating, I can tell that people would be incited to live there! Finally, groups created a rough idea of what they would like to have for their countries flag. The majority of the groups were able to compromise and work together through their difference of opinions. If they had time, groups continued on to create the type of government they want for their country. We will continue with this tomorrow and also start creating a constitution for their country!

Language:
Today we began our DRA's. Students will all be tested at a higher level to begin with and if necessary, I will make adjustments and test back at grade level.

Math:
Today students looked at Fibonacci's sequence. I was super impressed with their ability to continue the sequence to the 16th term and find the different patterns throughout the sequence. Most students finished the worksheet in class (or a large amount of it) so I created an optional challenge! I want to see if students can find out the first 25 numbers of the sequence and then recite them by memory. If they are able to do this I will reward with 5 gotcha tickets and 5 house points. I hope this challenge will be accepted!!
