Good afternoon!
Students looked great in their casual clothes today!

A note from Ms. Helen, our Admissions Coordinator - As you are aware, the re-registration season is upon us and we have recently sent home packages with your child(ren). We value your loyalty and commitment to our school community and would love to continue our partnership by offering priority enrollment for our current SJA families. We kindly ask that you take a moment to review your financial statement and complete the information in the package and make any necessary changes to your place of residence, employment, email changes or any medical information that the administration should be aware of. Please be aware that in order to secure your child’s enrolment, it is imperative that you submit your re-enrollment package and fees no later than February 12, 2018 at 4:00 PM. After this date, all available grade-level spaces will be open to our families on waitlists who will then have the opportunity to secure any vacant positions.
Please bring in re-registration forms as soon as possible to ensure your child's enrollment.  Teacher requests are also taken into consideration based on the date of re-registration.

**If you have a particular teacher in mind, please do not hesitate to make a request and we will do our best to meet it.**

Math:
To begin I had a small review of what was covered last week and have students come to the board and solve the answers.

We then we looked at Dividing Decimals by 1-digit Whole Numbers. Students were able to give me a step by step instruction on how to use long division. Just like when multiply a decimal number, we do not worry about the decimal until the end but have to remember to put it back into the answer!

We will continue with dividing decimals tomorrow and over the next few lessons we will do a review of both multiplying and dividing. Our Decimals Quiz #2 is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday February 6th.

Language:
Students today had time to rehearse in pairs as well as small groups. It is great to see the memorization progress happening right now. I can tell that many students are spending time at home practicing. I thoroughly enjoyed the 10 speeches that I saw today and our TA Miss Victoria was impressed with the level of expression and clarity that she saw students demonstrating while delivering their speeches.

 UOI: Biodiversity
Today students completed the organizers and story boards for their persuasive commercials. The topics in our class are Deforestation, Pollution, Habitat Loss, and Hunting. It is great to see how many solutions that each group was able to come up with to help reduce or solve their issue. The students are really becoming healthy biodiversity advocates!

30/01/2018

Good evening!

I cannot believe that January is almost over! With the end of the month comes CASUAL DAY!
Please also ensure that you are sending your child with proper warm outdoor clothing. I have seen a few students without gloves or hats. They will be sent back inside if they do not have these items.

Math:
Today we looked at multiplying decimals by one-digit whole numbers. Students showed me that they are very capable of multiplying both in expanded and short form. Most students finished this work in class but others needed more time to solve the word/number riddle on the back.

Additionally, I looked over the math that had been sent as homework yesterday and took up a question that almost all were stumped on. I want to ensure that students are truly understanding concepts so that our next quiz will have great result. Our next decimals quiz is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday February 6th. Review packages will be sent over this weekend.

Language:
Today students had time to rehearse their speeches with partners. I also consulted with six students and will continue tomorrow. Thursday we will begin small classroom presentations so that students have experience speaking in front of larger groups. If students are finding that their speech is not long enough they are encouraged to add more detail, explanations, or research to their speech. Though it is a good copy it can still be altered, just keep all versions in the purple folder.

UOI:
Students started their last group summative which we have entitled Biodiversity Defenders. In groups students are responsible for creating a commercial about a negative human impact that is affecting biodiversity. Today students picked their topic, completed a graphic organizer and began to create a story board for their commercial. I was very impressed with how passionate the students are about this project! They worked really well in their groups today.

Good evening!
Today the students were extremely excited to see their reading buddies. Not only did I see great reading being done, but both grades were able to practices their speeches at this time!

Math:
Today students were given a worksheet that complied the last three lessons. I wanted to ensure that students were understanding the lessons as we will be progressing with multiplication and division of decimals throughout the week.

Language:
It was great to see home many students have already began to rehearse their speeches at home. The speech is to be memorized so I am sure students will be continuously practicing at home. I asked that students self-evaluate their speech so that tomorrow, while consulting with each student, we can strive to make the speeches even better (if need be).

26/01/2018

Finally Friday!
I can tell that the students are ready for the weekend. I know that Wednesday's trip took a lot of their energy.

Math:
Today we looked at Multiplying whole numbers with 0.1, 0.01, 0.001. Students first talked in pairs about how they thought the number would change (become smaller or larger) when being multiplied by a decimal. Students were able to understand that the number would be getting small, therefore the decimal had to move towards the left. We also went over the longer way to find the answer by using expanded multiplication so that students have an understanding of why we can use this shortcut of moving the decimal over spaces to the left.

Language:
Overall, students did very well with their spelling tests today and have gotten their tests back to be signed over the weekend.
We spent our language time finishing up our rough copies today! Good copies are to be done over the weekend. Students can either type and print their good copy or write it by hand in cursive. Once they have finished their good copy they are to fill out a self-assessment. By doing this, they will be able to honestly judge their own work and see what areas may need more attention or editing.
Students are also to complete their literacy circle work for the weekend. They will be commenting on Chapters 5,6,7,8. I can tell the students are enjoying the novel as they like to talk about what they read while waiting to go to the morning assembly. It is great to see them taking a real interest!

Have a lovely, relaxing weekend!
