Math:
We have continued on with decimals and today looked at Multiplying Decimals by 10, 100, 1000, and 10 000. Many students understand that we need to move the decimal place over to the right but I also made sure they understand where the knowledge of that shortcut comes from. Students wrote a note in their notebooks and had a chance to complete a large amount of the homework.
Additionally, students were handed back their decimal quizzes today. Overall the class did quiet well. The majority of marks lost were because of simple, silly mistakes or errors in reading the question properly. Students are encouraged to take their time, ask clarifying questions, and check their work thoroughly before handing in a quiz or test. We will be having another quiz about decimals that will also go towards an overall mark for the decimals unit. Please sign the test and have students bring it back to school either tomorrow or Thursday.
Language:
Students have been working so hard on their speeches and a lot of them are starting to sound really impressive. All students are working on their rough drafts or editing their speeches to ensure that they are long enough and include enough details to make their opinion convincing. Students were also given a checklist to help guide their writing.
Students will be working hard on these over the next few days to ensure that their good copy is done and ready to rehearse next week.
UOI: Biodiversity
Students brought in their research for A World Without. I went around and checked to see that all students had detailed research and had included a food chain/ web within their organizer. Students had time in class to begin their posters but will complete the poster, on their own, at home over the next two days. Students are to ensure that they include a picture of their endangered species, the population, the food web, and a sentence or two about why people should help protect their animal. These posters are to be persuasive and aim to convince the audience as to why they should try to protect endangered species.
Students can either make their poster by hand or use a computer.
The posters that are the most convincing and appealing will be photocopied and posted around the school.
