One more school day until the trip to the Aquarium! Please make sure that you send your child to school with a packed, disposable lunch. The bus leaves promptly at 9am on Friday, please make sure your child is not late.
Spelling:
We have done some spelling sparkle this week and I can tell students have been working on their spelling lists! Since we are on a field trip Friday, our spelling test will be tomorrow.
Math:
Today we looked at estimating sums and differences of decimals as well as adding and subtracting decimals.
For the worksheet Estimating Sums and Differences, we looked at the front of the worksheet and how there are three different ways to estimate adding decimals and two different ways to estimate subtracting decimals. If students are finding this page difficult, please refer back to these tips on the front.
Before working on adding and subtracting decimals students watched a Math Antics video (0:47- 3:40) that stressed the importance of lining up the decimal when adding or subtracting multiple digit decimal numbers so that we are using the correct place value columns.
Language:
Today we looked at the Persuasion is All Around you worksheet that had been homework. Students had noticed things on the tv, internet, books, magazines, billboards and flyers that were trying to persuade the reader. I was very impressed that they were able to comment on if they found the item persuasive or not and why.
We also had our last day to work on our OREO organizers and I am very happy to see that most students have really put in a lot of effort over the last few days. I can tell that we are going to have very powerful persuasive speeches! Those who finished the organizer during class time began to work on their introduction paragraphs. Tomorrow beings the writing of our rough draft.
Though we are done with the organizer, students are still encouraged to research, at home, about their topic if they find that they need stronger research-based evidence.
OUI: Biodiversity
Today we continued to look at food chains, but within the larger picture of a food web. Students participated in a food web activity where they had to organize animals picture cards into the proper food web (with correct arrows to show energy transfer).
Students were also introduced to our new summative project that is A World Without. To begin, students are to pick an animal on the endangered species list. Please visit this WWF site and look at the list of possible animals they have listed.
Notes:
